Project History

Shaw's Brow Car Park

In 2008 and 2009, Constructive Evaluation (CE) was appointed by the Borough Of Douglas Council (Isle of Man) to undertake four phases of structural investigation works at Shaw's Brow Car Park. Currently the Borough of Douglas is the Isle of Mans largest local authority; it is the only one currently with borough status and provides services for up to 27,000 residents including the provision and maintenance of the Shaw's Brow Car Park.

Shaw's Brow Car Park is located in the centre of the town off of Lord Street. In 2003, the facility was constructed in order to meet the boroughs ever growing needs for public parking facilities close to local amenities.

A measured survey of the structure was first completed by CE in October 2008. As a result of the findings, a second phase of works was actioned in November 2008 to determine the presence of the structural and movement joints; the investigation consisted of various aspects including a visual survey/exploration for the presence of soft joints to columns and stair towers, cover meter and ferroscan surveys of the Ancon support system and support plinths to determine the steel configuration, localized breakouts to prove brickwork bonding and reinforcement size, Investigation of copings, the removal of column head facing to enable scanning of the underlying steel and a level survey of the drainage gulley in relation to known areas of ponding.

A third phase of works was requested and completed over December and January 2009. This entailed exploration by means of electromagnetic scanning equipment to determine the presence and configuration of metal wall ties and angle supports, this was completed along side the drilling of randomly positioned flight holes to confirm wall tie presence via a sideways viewing boroscope.

CE was asked to return to complete a fourth phase of works in February 2009 in order to perform load monitoring testing within the car parking facility. This phase was also completed to the satisfaction of the client.

Work is continuing on this project.
